Folks in Louisville are always looking for a good party, and the standards are high in this town. We do, after all, host the Kentucky Derby, where all business stops for the first week in May. So what better way to distribute our Shift Your Shopping materials than with a party for our members?
LIBA (Louisville Independent Business Alliance) is an alliance of almost 700 locally owned and independent businesses. This year, we’ve translated the Shift Your Shopping campaign into a contest. For two lucky people, shopping from independent retailers this holiday season will yield more than just that warm and fuzzy feeling of supporting the local economy. There are two ways to win: 1) collect receipts from five member businesses (by Jan. 15), mail in or present the receipts for review at one of the sponsor sites and the customer will be entered into the drawing to win $1000 in gift certificates to LIBA businesses.
But folks can enter and engage without making a purchase, too. They simply tag #holLOUdays in social media posts to be entered to win $250 in gift certificates to LIBA businesses.
Our member launch party took place on Thursday, November 20th at Revelry Boutique Gallery – a shop that stocks items exclusively from local artists and craftspeople. By attending, members were entered to win a free year of LIBA membership and a bottle of prime bourbon from our own Heaven Hill, one of the largest independent distillers in the country. Bohemian Monkey offered complimentary henna tattoos, and of course plenty of snacks, beer and bourbon.
We distributed plenty of materials to help our businesses promote the Shift Your Shopping Contest, Small Business Saturday, and buying local in general. Balloons and buttons featuring the #holLOUdays hashtag/slogan to decorate with, materials from American Express to display and give away on Small Business Saturday, and chalk to take back to member businesses/homes to “spread the weird” and write Buy Local messages on sidewalks (more on that in another article).
“The Shift Your Shopping Contest is aimed at contrasting the typical Black Friday shopping frenzy with a neighborly, community-minded approach to thoughtful gift giving,” said Jennifer Rubenstein, director of LIBA. “Buying from locally-owned independents is a gift to the community because of the financial ramifications and the well-being of the businesses that make our town unique.”
LIBA’s Shift Your Shopping Contest is generously sponsored by Feeders Supply , Revelry Gallery Boutique, Louisville Magazine and LEO Weekly. Full contest details and a list of participating businesses are at www.keeplouisvilleweird.com.
